What do I need first?
You need to choose a Domain name.

Choose your name.Name Search
Search your name with an ending like: .com, .ca, .net, .org
Lucky for me, I am a Canadian citizen so I can have .ca if I want. For a business site, .com is still the most common and recognizable.

What do I need next?
You need a place to put your website. This space is provided by a Web Host.

What is Web Hosting?
It is space aka bandwidth on the web. You can get hosting for free that has banners and popups on your site. Or, you can pay and only advertise your own business. Every single letter on your website needs to be stored on a server which takes space. Every letter is one byte, and a megabyte is one million bytes. Your website might look very small but if you right click and view source on a simple webpage you will see oodles and oodles of bytes.

How do I get my stuff up on the web?
You use an FTP aka file transfer protocol.

That sounds pretty simple. Why can’t I just host my own website?
Assuming that your service provider allows you to do so, and assuming you have terabytes of disk space and ram which is unlikely, there is a hornets nest of problems that even the most techy geeks get. Like ensuring your computer never ever crashes, never ever gets turned off, never ever ever gets a virus, adware, or malware and assuming that if any of these things goes wrong, you could fix it – Then, yes, you could host your own website.
